Finally is Mary Browley, Harriets(Tubman) sister. Araminta Ross( Harriet Tubman) was born in Maryland to Harriet Greene and Benjamin Ross. As a child she was a slave. She would help plant tobacco. Such is the case in The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes which takes place probably some time in the fifteenth or early sixteenth centuries. Don Quixote, formerly Quixana, was not really a don at all. He was a wealthy, intelligent farmer who read too many books about knight-errantry and went crazy. He convinced a simple-minded peasant named Sancho to become his squire, promising him wealth and a high spot in society. This book consists of many adventures these two had, both were convinced that they were doing brave and honorable acts of chivalry, when they were only two fools running around the countryside. Cervantes tries to make his book more interesting with the use of point of view. Don Quixote sees what his mind and imagination create, not that which is transferred through the optic nerves in a very clean-cut scientific manner. He retreats to a world that holds meaning for him. When he first departs, he stops at an inn and his eyes make it a beautiful castle with blushing maids and noble sirs. The wench Aldonza is turned into Dulcinea, his one true love, who he swears by in his battles and contemplates when he is idle. Another example of his point-of-view is the famous windmill incident. Quixote sees thirty monstrous giants with long arms the length of two leagues. such is the demented mind of Don Quixote. He went down into a legendary pit to behold its wonders. Once inside, he convinced himself he saw a transparent castle and that the people there were kept alive hundreds of years by Merlins magic when he seemed to only dream it. When Quixote does something unreasonable, Sancho despises the fact that his master might be mad and accepts some of the lunacy to make his job easier. When Quixote starts to die and loses the madness, Sancho perspective changes and regards Quixote more with pity than with his former respect. The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes is a long piece that will give you a different perspective on madness and the curing of it. I would recommend this book to someone who relishes long descriptions and speeches full of double-talk. In medieval times, knight-errants roamed the countryside of Europe, rescuing damsels and vanquishing evil lords and enchanters. This may sound absurd to many people in this time, but what if a person read so many books about these so-called knight-errants that he could not determine the real from that which was read? Such is the case in The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes which takes place probably some time in the fifteenth or early sixteenth centuries. Don Quixote, formerly Quixana, was not really a don at all. He was a wealthy, intelligent farmer who read too many books about knight-errantry and went crazy. He convinced a simple-minded peasant named Sancho to become his squire, promising him wealth and a high spot in society. This book consists of many adventures these two had, both were convinced that they were doing brave and honorable acts of chivalry, when they were only two fools running around the countryside. Cervantes tries to make his book more interesting with the use of point of view. Don Quixote sees what his mind and imagination create, not that which is transferred through the optic nerves in a very clean-cut scientific manner. He retreats to a world that holds meaning for him. When he first departs, he stops at an inn and his eyes make it a beautiful castle with blushing maids and noble sirs. The wench Aldonza is turned into Dulcinea, his one true love, who he swears by in his battles and contemplates when he is idle. Another example of his point-of-view is the famous windmill incident. Quixote sees thirty monstrous giants with long arms the length of two leagues. such is the demented mind of Don Quixote. He went down into a legendary pit to behold its wonders. Once inside, he convinced himself he saw a transparent castle and that the people there were kept alive hundreds of years by Merlins magic when he seemed to only dream it. Another way Cervantes uses point-of-view to let the reader know that Quixote has little grasp of reality. I will refer back to the windmills because that is the clearest example: Sancho tried to tell Quixote that the giants were only windmills, but he didnt listen and Sancho couldnt fathom that his master was mad, so he shuts the incident out of his mind, displaying some of the madness of Don Quixote in our supposedly sane squire. When Quixote does something unreasonable, Sancho despises the fact that his master might be mad and accepts some of the lunacy to make his job easier. When Quixote starts to die and loses the madness, Sancho perspective changes and regards Quixote more with pity than with his former respect. Backgroundà Jefferson County School System (JCSST) is a school system that educates about 10,000 students in 18 different schools, consisting of fourteen elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. In 1970 administrative computing had begun for doing student scheduling, grade reporting and keeping record of student enrollment. In 1976 the school corporation purchased a DEC PDP 11/34 computer, and the student management applications were converted from the university computer. As the years went by and Technology changed, JCSS has been keeping up. Now they have four Dell servers operating under UNIX and PCââ¬â¢s and Pcââ¬â¢s in all JCSS locations are connected to the system via a high-speed TCP/IP network. Now the newly hired superintendent Dr. Henry Greene and a small task force of Administrators decided that JCSS systems should be replaced with purchased software and it should utilize and integrate database and report-generation software. This task force also suggested that the programming staff of the data processing department would no longer be needed if these recommendations are accomplished. Discussion Everything started off well, a task force of administrators was established and a task of selecting a vendor to provide the hardware and software to replace the current administrative computing applications at JCSS went good. By late March, the new DP Director and her committee had prepared and sent out a 71 page RFP to 23 possible vendors with proposals being submitted by May 4. The RFP stated that ââ¬Å"The proposals will be evaluated on functional requirements, support services, and a 5-year life cycle cost. â⬠This RFP was sent to vendors that would contract to accept responsibility for all the software, support and training services required to install and maintain the new system. After the DP Director evaluated the responses that were submitted, she chose three serious contenders. These contenders were invited to demonstrate their system to the committee. However, the vendors were not told in detail what to show except that they show the major systems. This was mistake number one. I would have wanted these vendors to demonstrate to me what I needed to my specific details. Second, instead of visiting a School that already use a similar system, the committee only visited two sites. And this was because of time and money constraints. The DP Director and the Assistant Principle spent one day at these locations observing the systems and the committee members made calls to others that use the vendors to get their feedback on the systems. Another mistake, what they need the systems for may not be the same as what I need the system for. No matter how they did it, everybody was satisfied with the systems. After a difficult decision the committee selected DSI, even though neither of the vendors systems did exactly what they wanted it to do. Right here I could say that was another mistake but I think just like when you learning how to cook something new, it takes a few times of making it before you get it just the way you want it. You have to figure out how to use the program the way it needs to be used. This is where we go into our next phase, implementation. In December the DSI people helped implement the new system. And as soon as the systems got purchased and put into play at JCSS, the complications started. The first problem was with the financial systems. Most was converted to the new system but the real major problem was installing and using the student management systems. The DP Director planned to follow the cycle of the academic year when implementing the student systems. First, they would transfer all the student demographic information from the present system to the new systemââ¬â¢s database. Then they would complete the studentsââ¬â¢ fall class schedules by the end of the spring semester, as they had been doing with the old system, so that the studentsââ¬â¢ schedules would be on the new system and ready to go in the fall. During the summer they would pick up the attendance accounting on the new system so it would be ready for the fall. Then they would implement grade reporting so it would be ready for use at the end of the first six-week grading period in the fall. Finally, they would convert the student transcript information from the old system so that fall semester grades could be transferred to the transcripts at the end of the semester. The transferring of the studentââ¬â¢s demographic information was a success, but the scheduling was a disaster. I believe this came from a lack of training or should I say the lack of time that was not taken out for the training. DSI was willing to train any and all employees; however, the employees did not take the allotted time to get the training. I think all involved individuals should have made time to get this training. The summer break was a great time to get this completed but if they were not on the payroll, they were not there for training. Fortunately, Paul Faris, the scheduling officer at Roosevelt, was working summer school, and with his assistance they were just able to get all the schedules done two weeks before school started. For preparation for the upcoming fall year, the secretaries and the counselors should have been paid to come to training over the summer. When things started failing a group of names should have been written down so that these could be trained in whatever areas that needed to be improved. This would have helped the process move along more smoothly. It is already over whelming when learning something new in the IT world, but to learn it without the proper training is foolish. Conclusion The real problem was not the vendor that was chosen, it was the lack of user training and there was no user manual available for employees. DSI offered JCSS everything they asked for; they were on time when needed for trouble shooting as well as for training the employees. And remember it was the committee that said they could work well with them (with DSI). Looking back, JCSS chose the right vendor, but without detailed definition of what the system needed, and without the proper training, money constraints and a plan for the project, the system would surely fail.

Social factors effecting educational attainment Essay This essay will attempt to examine the extent to which home factors may affect social class differences in educational attainment, looking at factors such as culture, income and the nature of the curriculum with reference to sociological theories. The essay will consider these factors, mainly focusing on home factors, and attempt to conclude which if any factors have the largest impact on educational achievement. The first part of this essay will look at the home factors and how they affect educational attainment, home factors essentially define our social class, aspects like income, space per person and effective money earned per year all amount to our class in society. For the purpose of this essay we define class as ââ¬Å"A set or category of things having some property or attribute in common and differentiated from others by kind, type, or qualityâ⬠and in reference to how this is being used in this essay we have three classes in the UK, the upper class which has the highest net worth and will often contain a family legacy of money, the middleclass who are people with higher level jobs such as managerial positions in companyââ¬â¢s and the working class which consists of people working manual, often unskilled jobs which results in the lowest net worth of the three. Highlighting the difference in terms of educational attainment when it comes to social class is important as it allows us to focus on the working class and what affects their children in school. The Youth Cohort Study found that in 1998 children who had parents working in a managerial or professional position on average would achieve a 69% rate of 5 or more GCSEââ¬â¢s at A*-C level compared to children with parents working unskilled manual jobs only achieving a 20% rate. (Youth Cohort Study 2002, 2006, 2008). From this figure we can see how your class affects your level of educational attainment. This essay will now look at the home factors effecting social class and thus educational attainment. Feinstein conducted research into how educational attainment was based around parental attitude and support; this was often times measured by teacherââ¬â¢s assessments of how much interest the parents showed. This would mean that working class children would receive less help , support and encouragement with their school work when compared to a middle class child, Feinstein argued this was a major factor in educational attainment and pointed out that working class people who are earning less in unskilled manual jobs may have to work more hours and because of the physical nature of the job may be more tired and thus not have the time or energy to attend which would give the teachers a negative perception of the parents. Douglas, Gerwitz and Halsey all argued that home factors such as poor diet, lack of privacy and lack of school resources could all play a role in determining what social class a family would be classified as and thus how it would effect educational attainment. Douglas believed that a number of factors such as size of the family which would mean less space to work in, students health; which would be affected by the diet they could afford which would be poorer in working class familyââ¬â¢s and the amount of support they could afford would all effect educational attainment. These are all areas which will be worse off when comparing working class familyââ¬â¢s to middle class family. Bourdieuââ¬â¢s cultural capital theory builds upon this idea of class effecting educational attainment and states that the education system is systematically based on the culture of the most dominant social class and thus values knowledge and ideologyââ¬â¢s that middle class parents may enforce upon their kids and devalue the skill sets and values which a working class child might have. Bourdieu argues that the major role of education is cultural reproduction of the dominant classes which would mean that the things that a working class child brings to the education system would not be of as much value as that of a middle class child and thus they are indirectly discriminated against in terms of how teachers see their skills. This could result in students preforming poorer simply because home factors determine their social class and thus their educational attainment. We can see how home factors can radically change the educational attainment of a child when we look at Hymenââ¬â¢s theory that even when IQ is held constant throughout the class, the working class children will do worse than the middle class children. Hyman theorizes that this is down to the values and morals of the different classes and they would be dictated these classes by the home factors mentioned earlier so there is a strong argument that home factors drastically change the level of educational attainment that a child might get. When comparing one sphere of influence to another, for example out and in school factors to home factors we can see that they all influence students educational attainment based on class. When looking at in school factors Hallum theorized that the curriculum was written by middle class people for middle class people, this obviously leaves the working class people, who have different values and morals, at a disadvantage. When the curriculum favors a certain skill set both in terms of values, morals and general ideologyââ¬â¢s the group which donââ¬â¢t have this set of skills are going to lag behind and not be valued as much, as an example this could result in a working class child who performs academically in a set which can only achieve a max grade of D at GCSE when the child is perfectly capable of attaining a B+ grade. In this example we would see the middle class child be kept in a higher set because of the values and morals in place and the lack of recognition of the strengths of the working class child. Another in school factor would be speech codes. Bernstein thought that different classes had different modes of speaking which were valued differently in a middle class school environment. Bernstein said that working class children were limited to restricted speech codes which were characterized by shorthand speech, grammatically simple structure, meaning often conveyed by gesture and slang. This is in stark comparison to middle class children who have command over both elaborate and restricted speech codes which gives me a massive advantage as they can use the restricted speech code when necessary but also use the elaborate in situations such as exams or writing practices which are looking for the elaborate speech code usage. To conclude we can see that home factors affect social class massively and thus affect educational attainment and success massively as well. Theoryââ¬â¢s such as cultural deprivation, parental attitude and speech codes have critics but they have elements of truth which highlights how a middle class curriculum and often times middle class teachers favor middle class students and their moral and value systems they have in place, this can lead to working class children who have to deal with a home environment which isnââ¬â¢t as well suited to learning and education also having to cope with being given less opportunityââ¬â¢s despite a similar level of IQ which can result in a lower level of educational attainment.

Furthermore, 38 percent admit they have used abbreviations in their schoolwork like ââ¬Å"LOLâ⬠, which stands for ââ¬Å"laugh out loudâ⬠. Additionally, 25 percent say that they use emoticons such a s ââ¬Å"smiley facesâ⬠in formal writing. The problem has become so apparent that some U. S. politicians are concerned that the English language and sentence structure is being twisted, negatively affecting students' learning. The Personal A of Spanish
In English, theres no difference in the way the following two sentences are structured: I saw the tree.I saw Teresa. But in the Spanish equivalent, theres an obvious difference: Vi el à ¡rbol.Vi a Teresa. The difference is a one-letter word ââ¬â a ââ¬â but its an essential one to learn. Known as the personal a, the short preposition is used to precede direct objects when those objects are people. Although a is usually translated as to, the personal a normally isnt translated into English. The First Rule of the Personal A The basic rule is a simple one: The a precedes the mention of a specific person or persons used as a direct object, and (except in some rare cases where its used for clarification) it is not used in other cases. Some simple examples: Levantà ³ la taza. (He lifted the cup.)Levantà ³ a la muchacha. (He lifted the girl.)Oigo la orquestra. (I hear the orchestra.)Oigo a Taylor Swift.
